6 Tips To Moving Into A Newly Rented Home

Feb 12 2011

Many people choose to rent because they are the type that moves around and for them it just makes sense. Just because you are renting, does not mean that you should not take measures to protect yourself. It is not necessary for you to take out home insurance in most cases, but there are a number of measures you should consider when moving in.

Taking photos. There is nothing worse than having to pay for damages that you did not make when you leave. It is a good idea to take photos of any areas of concern and store them safely. Landlords can make mistakes and they can forget the state of things over time. I even had one landlord who was sure that all the cutlery in the house was hers!

Take records and ask to be fixed. If there is anything that you feel is not up to standard and will potentially get worse, it is a good idea to have them fixed immediately. Make sure that you keep a record, and where possible send a fax to your landlord, and even get a signature if you can. Take preventative measures.

Insurance. Because you are renting, definitely does not mean you don’t need insurance. You should update your contents insurance policy to your new location and also check what items you have insured. It is a good idea always to take photos of your personal belongings. If you don’t update it, it could become invalid. Because it is not so tangible, it can be easily to forget.

Changing the locks. You never will know who has copies of the keys to the house you are living in now. All door locks should be replaced. If there are window locks, you should talk to your Landlord about these too. It is too easy for the number of keys out there to multiply and get in the wrong hands.

A good clean. No matter how clean the place may look, it is a good idea to clean a location yourself. This is good for protecting yourself against germs and a good way to make sure the home is empty of any unwanted items. I have surprising found illicit items when cleaning, and I am glad that I disposed of them immediately. Taking the legal blame for them in the future would not have been very enjoyable.

Check your meters. I once moved into a house to find that my electricity meter was recording the power of a neighbours house, which I was later to find out was a relative of the landlord. It is a good idea to check all the readings and make sure that you meters are functioning correctly. If you are wondering why your electricity bills are so high in your new home, there is probably a reason why.

Feel safe, know you are protected and enjoy. Renting can be a very affordable way to live, and will often make

more financial sense if you are someone who is regularly on the move.
